Video of the Day: Lotus Teases New Esprit, V-8 Engine Made In-House

It appears Lotus is doing their best Lamborghini Aventador impression and it comes in the form of the 2013 Lotus Esprit. First unveiled at the 2010 Paris Motor Show, the new Esprit strays from Lotus’ usual subdued design, with a much gaudier nose than we are accustomed to seeing from the British automaker. Everything about this vehicle is futuristic from LED-enhanced nose to its center-mounted exhaust in the rear. The interior doesn’t stray too far from the usual Lotus formula, but it does add a digital instrument cluster and some carbon fiber trim.

While the redesigned Esprit is flashy to say the least, the biggest news may actually be under the hood. Lotus has begun developing engines for the Esprit in-house that will be mid-mounted, smaller, and weigh less than the Toyota-sourced engines it has been using for several years. The new engines will also be much more fuel efficient. Both a V-8 and V-6 variant are in the works with displacements ranging from 4.0- to 4.8-liters for V-8 models and 3.0- to 3.5-liters in the V-6 configuration. The new V-8 engine will be 130 pounds lighter than the 5.0-liter V-8 that was sourced from the Lexus IS-F. Mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, the Esprit is expected to check in with numbers are 550 horsepower and 620 ponies for the Esprit R. In this edition of Video of the Day Lotus explains why they’ve decided to build their engines in-house and what they have in store for the new Esprit. Check out the video below.

Do you think the Esprit is a step in the right direction for Lotus? Tell us what you think in the comment section below.
